Welcome to the unique world of Roadmaster Active Suspension (RAS), the ultimate assist for vehicles with rear leaf spring suspension. RAS is the only suspension upgrade that converts basic “passive” leaf springs into mechanically “active” suspension. RAS instantly absorbs and dissipates load force energy resulting in significantly improved vehicle stability, balance, traction and control, with or without a load. Roadmaster Active Suspension adds critical strength to leaf springs but WILL NOT compromise ride quality. The patented design eliminates bottoming out, axle wrap and wheel hop, greatly improves road handling by reducing sway and dangerous body roll on cornering, and strengthens the rear leaf springs for towing or hauling maximum loads with maximum safety. Vehicles and fleets that consistently operate under load benefit from improved fuel efficiency, vehicle safety and load carrying capacity as well as reduced driver fatigue and extended tire and suspension component life. Common RV Problems

Over the years, we’ve identified common problems that our customers have with their vehicles. If any of these describe your vehicle, make a note of them and contact us for more information.

  • Bottoming Out: When the suspension travels to its lowest limit and makes contact with the suspension stops. Possible causes: Insufficient spring tension, worn shock absorbers, overloading.
  • Bounce: Bouncing may occur in the front of the coach, the rear, or both. Possible causes: Worn or insufficient shock absorbers
  • Harsh Ride: The vehicle rides stiff. You can feel every crack rut, or bump in the road. Possible causes: Excessive tire pressure, excessive spring rate, improper shock absorbers.
  • Listing: The vehicle is lower one side than the other. Possible causes: Improper weight distribution, worn or weak springs, spring hangers, body mounts or bushings.
  • Porpoising: The coach will teeter-totter in a front-to-back movement after encountering a bump in the road–most common on short (20-30 foot) motorhomes.  Can usually be resolved with better shocks and/or springs.
  • Ride Height: Determined by chassis type and is measured accordingly. Example: On a P32 chassis, it is measured from the top of the bump stop to the bottom of the striker plate.
  • Rut Tracking: The coach follows the grooves worn into the road or ridges that have been created where an asphalt surface meets a concrete road surface. Possible causes: Insufficient front end weight, type of tire used.
  • Sway: The coach leans, sways or rocks in a side-to-side motion. Typically caused by weak springs and/or lack of an anti-sway bar.
  • Tail Wagging the Dog: Typically caused by excessive lateral motion of the rear axle.
  • Wind Drift: The coach is being pushed off its centerline of travel due to cross winds or passing vehicles. Can usually be solved with a steering control product.

FSD Shock Absorbers

The KONI is the first shock absorber that offers superior handling without compromising comfort. You can’t find a better shock for your motorhome than FSD: KONI frequency selective dampers. KONI has combined the benefits of performance and comfort into one shock absorber. FSD is firm for control over large bumps and corners, but soft for comfort over expansion joints and rough roads. While KONI is known to reduce bouncing in motorhomes, our FSD shocks include a special valve that filters out annoying vibrations before they enter the coach. The result is an incredibly smooth ride, with plenty of shock left to control pitching and swaying.

 

 

 

Not all dangerous driving situations have caution signs; a blowout around the next curve, a sudden gust of wind from a passing truck, or a new pothole at the bottom of a hill. Any such unexpected event might send a vehicle out of control. What does an anti-sway bar do?

Both stock and custom anti-sway bars are designed as a link between the suspension and the frame, and both use the weight of the axle as a brace against the chassis, so that pressure to one side of the motorhome (by weight shift, wind, or passing trucks) is countered by the bar. An RSS anti-sway bar, however, is built to offer significantly more resistance to sway.

RSS anti-sway bars have a thicker diameter than stock bars — often, a quarter to three-eighths of an inch more. Each incremental increase in diameter has an exponential effect on performance — on average, torsional roll stiffness is increased by 30 percent with every eighth-of-an-inch increase in diameter. In plain English, the bar offers 30 percent more resistance to sway.
